Humic acid formulation are widely used in soil and foliar application in Souss Massa region in Morocco. The difference between solid and liquid formulation is that liquid one is more suitable for drip irrigation, and give the exact quantity of nutrients to be supplied for greenhouse vegetables. Solid form are not used during the cropping season but before crop establishment. The foliar application is now a frequent manner of nutrient supply especially during cold season (November to February in our condition) where root absorption is affected by low transpiration rate. Now, the effect is spectacular when we apply humic acid formulation to leaves, the plants get stunted for a while (due to the heavy molecular weight of the humic molecules) but after that, plants get back with an important vegetative growth and biomass accumulation. In addition to that, crops save energy by delivering hormone like molecules, photosynthetic metabolites and enhancing water and nutrients uptake from soil.

As an example for foliar application in tomato greenhouse crop, we can in a simple application treat:

1-Calcium deficiency in future tomatoes (necrosis at the bottom of the fruit that lead to rotting)

2-Iron, zinc and manganese complex deficiency that appear in youngest leaves as chlorosis at the base of the leaves with some green netting.

3-Root regenerating by the action of auxin like effect of humic acid molecules.

Very difficult to ascertain how it benefits crop production unless some good chemistry is understood through research
