TTC is used to differentiate between metabolically active and inactive tissues. It is actually a redox indicator. To our experience, we find that INT (Curl and Sandberg,1961), was also equally effective compound. But I should say if you want to measure total microbial activity then go for FDA method. We find that FDA method represented 95% Fungi and entire bacteria and actinomycetes activities whereas TTC method is only representing 5% fungal activity beside bacteria and actinomycetes activities.
