Projection method of Chorin seems to be a straight forward method as compared to the fractional-step method (FSM) of Kim & Moin which deals with a pressure-like quantity rather than pressure itself. Since I don't work in the area of incompressible flow, I would like to know why does one opt for FSM? Is there a specific advantage FSM offers over projection method? Another question in relation to this, is that can the original projection method suggested by Chorin be used despite its disadvantages, if any?

The original Chorin-Temam method is first order accurate in time only. Most of the following developments are aimed at increasing the accuracy of the time discretization. A nice review of many approaches presented in the literature can be found in
