I highly recommend you to use Kolmogorov-smirnov test for assessing the normal distribution.

Based on my researches K-S test is not useful for big data ! it is for small data.
Histograms, skewness, and kurtosis should be used in dataset with a large number of attributes. As you know, geochemical data of stream sediments and minerals in general have a large number of samples. Therefore, it is not possible to use this test.
