يُعرّف الفَلاسفة الأخلاق على أنّها دراسة معياريّة للخير والشر تهتمّ بالقيم المُثلى، وتصلُ بالإنسان إلى الارتقاء عن السلوك الغريزي بمحض إرادته الحرة؛ حيث إنّها ترفُضُ التعريف السابق القائل بأنّ الأخلاق ترتبط بما يحدّده ويفرضهُ الآخرون، وترى أنّها تخصّ الإنسان وحده، ومصدرها ضميره ووعيه.
