pH is a measure of acidity nor alkalinity. It is dependent to some extent on the dissociation of compounds into the constituent ions. A "strong" acid is one that dissociates well into its ions in water, and "weak acid" dissociates poorly. Similarly alkalis. pH 1 to 7 is acid, 7-14 is alkaline, the further away from 7 indicating the "strength" so a strong acid will have a pH of eg 3 and a strong alkali will have a pH of eg 12
