The mean is a descriptive statistic but replicates are meaningless in this context.

I think I just figured out what the question is asking. In general, when presenting descriptive statistics, you want to use the raw data, not data already summarized with e.g. means. Some summary statistics --- like standard error of the mean --- essentially are descriptions about the means.

I want to compute range and other statistics on a dataset. Should I use means or replicates for computing range? Off course I understand that mean is itself a descriptive statistics.

Of course you can present the range of means. Without further context, it's really impossible to give you any meaningful input on your question.
