In addition to major nutrients as nitrogen and phosphorus compunds several other elements are needed to promote primary production. In freshwater is generally iron present in such concentrations not to become a limiting element. However, in seawater there are publications stating that iron is limiting. Some researchers have suggested that primary production thus could be increased by spraying iron salts on the sea, that would increase the algae uptake of carbon dioxide.
Iron is an important element which is involved in the both photosystems (b6f complex and PSi is indeed very rich in iron contant etc...), in respiratory chain (Cytochrome, Complex I , etc...) and in a lot of enzymes involved in various metabolism. The amount of iron indicated in the artificial culture medium for algae or cyanobacteria is generally a balanced concentration for the growth.
