What is “energy” in image processing?

I've read across several Image Processing books and websites, but I'm still not sure the true definition of the term "energy" in Image Processing. I've found several definition but sometimes they just don't match. So to be sure...

When we say "energy" in Image processing, what are we implying?

In image processing, "energy" usually means the squared Frobenius norm of the image, namely E=sum(sum(img.^2)) as in Matlab syntax.
