I am working on transparent/translucent zirconia-based ceramics. In many papers, I have seen that they are reporting both In-line transmission (%) & Total transmission (%) value of transparent/translucent ceramics using UV-VIS Spectrophotometer.

In a dense and high purity ceramic, the main sources of light scattering are the surface grain boundaries and the pores. The whole determination of the transmittance properties of materials requires at least three measurements as illustrated in the attached schematic diagram ;
- Total forward transmission (TFT) and total reflection (TR) are measured with the help of an integrating sphere whereas
- real in-line transmission (RIT) can be estimated with a conventional spectrometer.

Mahmood H. M. Thank you, Sir. This answer and the shared manuscript are too good for understanding. We are having an Integrated sphere attachment (ISR) in our UV-VIS Spectrophotometer (200- 1400 nm). Does it mean that we can't able to measure In-line transmittance? Can Total transmittance value compare with In-line transmittance value?

The term fully transparent should only be used to describe materials that exhibit clear images. Scratches on windows or the internal structure of transparent material (e.g. transparent ceramics) reduce clear images by scattered light. The measurement of transparency requires a spectrophotometer with very narrow illumination and measurement aperture since only non scattered in-line transmitted light contributes to clear images. Spectrophotometers with a 3 to 5° aperture are quite common. But for reliable characterization of the real in-line transmission, it is important to measure the inline intensity with as small an aperture as possible to exclude any scattered light. Since a zero degree aperture is impractical a very small aperture (e.g. 0.5°) has to be used. see pg 7 in the following reference;

So it means that if we want to shift from total transmittance (%) to in-line transmittance (%) then we need to avoid/reject scattered transmitted radiation (one way to reduce scattered transmitted radiations is by putting a narrow slit in the light path. Am I right?). As in the case of our ISR-supported UV-VIS spectroscopy, we are also putting a narrow slit (6/3 mm width), so can we say that after keeping a narrow slit (presently 6/3 mm), our UV-VIS is actually showing in-line transmittance only (so can I write and report this value as in-line transmittance?
