Researchers know that titles in Web of Science/Scopus indexed and/or listed in ABDC/ABS ranking ensures minimum standard for quality. But even top journals are subject to concern/suppression in the JCR reports whenever wrong practices, excessive self-citation etc. are followed (Ex. Journal of Business Ethics, IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity etc.)
As young researcher/academic what additional parameters (not any metrics)be considered or suggestions before submitting manuscripts to journals ?
It is an important aspect whether a manuscript is published or unpublished. Therefore, one can consider journals where it is easier to publish.
Make sure the journal is at least in the Scopus database
How many issues they have per year
Reading one or two papers from the targetted journal
....... But after all, the experience is the best guide! with time every researcher should create his/her own journals' list!
Dear Arjun R for a young researcher / academic it's certainly not easy to judge the quality of a journal. I always urge my students to regularly read a good number of journals in our field to get an idea about the quality of the articles published in these journals. Reading articles yourself is the most important requirement for becoming an expert in your field. When it come to choosing a journal to publish your own work my advice would be to always adhere to established publishers like Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, Taylor & Francis etc. That way you can avoid stepping into the traps of predatory journals which are only interested in your money. In contrast, most of the journals published by respected publishers do not ask for publication fees or articles processing charges etc. Always choose a journal with an impact factor so that your paper will be read worldwide and eventually cited by other researchers.
There are a lot of reputable journals out there. While they vastly differ in many qualities, here are some signs that you are working with a good journal:
- Database Listing: Are they listed in popular and international databases? How are they able to reach their readers?
- Relevance of Papers: How focused is that journal in their topic area? Do they publish papers that are only highly relevant to their scope? If so, that is a good sign.
- Clear Procedures: Are they transparent in terms of their submission, review and acceptance policies/procedures? Check their site and make sure everything is clear before you deal with them.

Dear Arjun R personally I would strongly suggest to ask your supervisor or a senior faculty member to suggest to you the best journals. This personal advice can be more useful than consulting the internet. Then I would try to regularly read the 10 leading journals in your field in order to keeo up with the most recent developments in your field. After a while you will then get a feeling about the quality of these journals. When is comes to publication of our work, I always take the impact factor into account. It's the easiest way to get some idea about the quality and importance of a journal.
