AMPK is activated once AMP/ATP ratio increases in the cells. This shifts energy machinery from energy consumpotion (e.g. glycogenesis, protein synthesis, lipogenesis and cholesterol synthesis) to energy generation (fatty acid and glucose oxidation). AMPK catalyzes phosphorylation of of HMG CoA- reductase, causing inhibition of cholesterol synthesis.
