My name is Seth Hostman. I am currently writing my senior thesis on the topic of cognitive and emotional intelligence. Specifically, I am looking at the correlation and interaction of the two domains. I am interested in hearing thoughts opinions, and dialogue over this topic to gained insight and perspective.
I suggest you approach the question from the two perspectives of Reason and Feeling. Rational intelligence has several forms, beautifully elucidated by a famous professor at Harvard, Howard Gardner, who put forward the idea of multiple intelligences. IQ is only one part of that, and is much more restrictive - concerned with logic and giving definite answers to closed questions. More general are forms of reasoning applied to open questions, where personal values play a role in the way the response to a question or issue is weighted. As you will appreciate, Emotional Intelligence is completely different. It concerns the ability to remain in an emotionally balanced state and not to take sides, when faced by an emotionally challenging situation. People who regularly practice Yoga, especially Yoga breathing and genuine Yoga meditation, obtain a firm foundation for stable emotions ('Balance of Mind is Yoga' - Yoga Samatvam Uchhyate) and gain a wonderful reputation among friends and colleagues. Cognitive intelligence One's abilities to learn, remember, reason, solve problems, and make sound judgments, particularly as contrasted with emotional intelligence.
Generally speaking, cognitive intelligence refers to the aility to reason, mentally focus, process visual information and have a working memory. For example, when we talk about IQ, we mean cognitive intelligence.
The Stanford-Binet Scale is a contemporary assessment which measures intelligence according to five features of cognitive ability, including fluid reasoning, knowledge, quantitative reasoning, visual-spatial processing and working memory.
Research by Offerman, Baily, Vasilopoulos, Seal & Vass (2004) showed that cognitive intelligence is a better predictor of performance on individual tasks whereas emotional intelligence is a better predictor of performance on team work.
From a behavioural perspective, cognitive intelligence is the ability to think, reason and react and has an obvious survival advantage as it involves learning.
Emotional intelligence is more of a social skill and involves theory of mind and the ability to empathise and react to others in a way that benefits the group.
Emotional intelligence is concerned with how people interact with their immediate environment, as well as how they interpret and compare feelings. Cognitive intelligence is the ability to recognize relationships between objects and solve problems in new settings using learning and memory. Research has shown, for example, that cognitive intelligence is a better predictor of performance on individual tasks, whereas emotional intelligence is a better predictor of teamwork performance (e.g., Offerman, Baily, Vasilopoulos, Seal & Vass, 2004).
Emotional intelligence, albeit emphasized later than cognitive intelligence, is no less vital. A person must not only strengthen cognitive skills, including memory and mental focus but also learn and improve social and emotional skills in order to be successful at work and in life.

When talking about cognitive and emotional intelligence, most people believe them to be contradicting. My belief is that they are complementary to each other and that a combination of both can help an individual achieve greater success in life.
