I have to summarize model of care for staffing of diagnostic imaging that includes the following modalities: Xray, CT, MRI, interventional radiology, nuclear medicine.
Looking at number of staff required on a shift based on number of inpatients and outpatients
The staff must be correlated: • available technological resources; • the need to work in H12 shifts for five days a week and for at least six hours on Saturdays, or in any case to the type of organization deemed most suitable to meet institutional needs; • the need for health services to be provided for the reference population, taking into account the expected workloads.
Could be evaluated a model that takes into consideration only the number of patients and not the individual services to avoid possible dis-harmonies in reporting between the various Radiology Units. This also makes it possible to make this model harmonious for all professional profiles, making it difficult to evaluate the use of non-medical health workers and administrative employees for each individual service
In addition to medical specialists (radiologists and nuclear Doctors) is necessary to value other professionals essential to the operation of a Unit of Diagnostic Imaging as Technicians, Nurses, Auxiliaries and Administrative staff. In my opinion, the activity of the Radiology units is a team activity comparable to that of an operating room, which for proper operation requires adequate sizing of all the personnel involved
I have been asked this question at my work quite frequently. I think the general agreement is that it is difficult to overgeneralise - cannot use the answer from one hospital/facility/practice to another. Some places have a very specific type of population/patient and it can be much more tedious than another that reports a lot of "normal" studies - which would be much easier/faster.
I think that departments that have a high number of normal tests suffer from a problem of impaired prescribing appropriateness
