I have been teaching governance ideas to my students one of the ideas related to modern risk society in which there are three types of protective needs 1) protecting people from the environment, 2) protecting environment from people, and 3) protecting people from one another. This is a very good trichotomy, but it is not mine and I would like to attribute the credit to the right author in my lectures.

The notion of a risk society is linked to Ulrich Beck (Risk Society, 1992) and has been pursued in sociology by Anthony Giddens in many of his books (e.g., in Runaway World, 1999).

Should one in some cases add to Ulrich Beck’s triad that one of the functions of government is to protect the people from itself? I am thinking of the checks and balances concept between the 3 branches of government in the USA Constitution.
Very good idea, to expand the triad, since it could not only be those three, but also look at the values and promote them.
