In physics, string theory is a theoretical framework in which the point-like particles of particle physics are replaced by one-dimensional objects called strings. In string theory, the different types of observed elementary particles arise from the different quantum states of these strings.

Bosonic string theory is constructed in d=26 whereas superstring theory is constructed in d=10. In superstring theories tachionic modes are absent whereas in bosonic strings they are present. Therefore bosonic string theory is unrealistic. Among superstring theories type IIA, IIB theories have phenomenological problems. IIA theory can only produce a U(1) gauge symmetry whereas IIB theory has no gauge symmetry.
Heterotic string is a closed string. It is also an orientable string. By the term "orientable" one means that we know in which direction we are traveling along the string. Heterotic string is a combination of D=26 bosonic string and D=10 fermionic string. This theory is supersymmetric and is constructed in 10 dimensions. This theory does not have tachionic modes. Lorentz invariant action was constructed by, Gross, Harvey, Martinec and Rohm in 1985. This theory is consistent only with gauge groups SO(32) or E8xE8
