I’m eager to start a research in the field of Machine learning and Image Processing (especially Gaussian process, GMM). I'm wondering how should I start my quest. How can I find a professor who helps me from distance. Should I search professors and then ask them by email?

In my opinion it's better to study some good papers that are new or have a high citations and via these papers you could find people who are popular in these fields. Also it's a good idea to visit high ranked universities' websites.
If you want to email them it's better to have an idea about the research that you like to do and asked them if it's appropriate or not. You could get these ideas from the future work part of articles.
