What are some good uses for a motor like this?
I'm working with an electrostatic motor which doesn't use magnets to generate it's mechanical motion. It is very light weight, made of abundant materials, non magnetic, and has good torque. A great feature is that to maintain torque the motor does NOT need to keep using current because it uses electrostatics instead of electromagnetic induction.
for what applications can this type of motor be used where it would have an advantage over traditional electromagnetic motors?
As the power (to be) delivered goes with P = V * I, even an electrostatic motor doesn't work without current. Although - at significantly higher voltages than used with traditional motors - the current will be significantly smaller than in traditional motors.
I could imagine applications rivaling with the fields of application the companies Maxon and Faulhaber currently excel.
The advantage of electrostatic motors might be a lighter wiring (lower copper cross-section required) - at the expense that better (thicker, heavier) wire isolation is required.
As in virtually all cases: nothing comes for free :)
Flight! This type of motor seems ideally suited to anything that flies. Drones, planes be they real or toy, helicopters...

Robots would be great- These motors are extremely efficient at low rpm, they give off almost no heat. These motors use high voltage and low current, so resistive losses are very, very low! Imagine a mobile robot using traditional motors, I bet they feels like an oven when it is just standing next to you with all the resistive losses.
