In my setting social media, specifically Facebook, is very effective in marketing. I noticed that social media is used for different purposes in the East than in the West. It is more than a means for social connection. It is their entertainment, news source, gossip channel. People here spend time on FB more than any other website. Facebook ads are used effectively in this context.

Being on social media can have both negative and positive impacts. A bad review can destroy a brand.
