The basic building regulations are regulated in the state building regulations („Landesbauordnung“) of the 16 federal states. At the local level, the development plans („Bebauungsplan“) determine the details of possible changes, sizes and special designs (number of floors, roof shapes, colors, etc.). In the case of older buildings that are historically significant, monument protection („Denkmalschutz“) applies with an obligation to preserve the original structural condition.
