I am culturing micro algae taking from another laboratory's fish aquarium for my research. I am considering making media in my laboratory to culture them in 5-7 days under favourable temperature with constant air bubbling. Media will contain Starch, (NH4)2SO4, and NaH2PO4 for C:N:P ratio of 20:5:2 (mg/l).
With your experiences, do you think this will be efficient and can you suggest any other method?

the question is what type of water were the fish and algae exposed to? in case its sea water then I'd recommend using Guillards f/2.
In case the water were fresh i. e. with minimum salinity then of course TAP is your choice since its a rich media and will suffice to most types of fresh water microalgae.
You should also ask what type of consortia of microalgae you have? In case you have diatoms or cocolithophorids Id supplument the medium with silica as well.
if you can describe better the type of microalgae you have, in case you isolated them we can give you better medium predictions.

The microalgae is a mixed culture taken from a reservoir.
Moreover, my study will not focus on the isolation.

Hi, David.
In our lab, we use BG-11 medium to cultivate both freshwater cyanobacteria (your case) and microalgae, and we are seeing good results. In fact, despite the recommendation for cyanobacteria, this medium do not restrict the growth of microalgae. In our case, BG-11 medium can induce a better growth than Bold's Basal Medium (BBM), that is recommended for many freshwater microalgae.

I have been culturing microalgae for several years and the media I used is F-Medium for brown microalgae and TMRL for green microalgae and it gives high density (cells/ml).

All is good, it depends on what species of micro algae is cultured because the nutrient needs for each algae are different.
just to remind you that the adaptation of the microalgae to the new medium and conditions is an important step. but, it will take some time.
