I used to call a molar that is mesial out as mesial offset but in many manufacturer catalogs tubes to accomplish such movements are called distal offset tubes.
I've seen this question waiting for an answer for months now, but have not been able to provide an answer. Not sure why I didn't think of this before, but I believe both are correct, it's just a matter of whether one is talking about the wire or the bracket.
I have attached a diagram to explain my thoughts (diagram in no way meant to represent where the center of rotation is etc., just the direction of rotation).
Wire: mesial offset (ie: mesial out) bend results in a Mesiobuccal/Distopalatal rotation of the molar as the tube engages the out of place wire.
Bracket/Tube: distal offset (ie: distal out) angulation of the slot results in the wire deflecting to engage the slot. Return of the wire to the passive position results in the same direction of rotation as your mesial offset wire bend.
The proper biomechanical term is the Mesiobuccal/Distopalatal rotation. Offset is used to describe the bend we do in the wire or bracket prescription but not to describe molar rotation. This is what I think
Thanks Ali hassan . the confusion is actually of term mesial offset or distal offset . A mesial offset bend in wire in wire or distal offset bend in bracket results in Mesiobuccal/Distopalatal rotation of molar . So there is lack of standardization of this term .
Dr Andrew in his landmark book used the term molar offset to describe this Mesiobuccal/Distopalatal rotation. Dr Alexander in his 20 principle book used the term distal offset in molar tubes to achieve this molar offset discribed by Andrew . So in catalogue the term distal offset tubes or bands is used to achieve 5 degree molar offset in class 1 occlusion in maxillary molars .
So Dr Gibson gave a very logical answer to this question . if wire is bend its mesial offset and if tube is mesial in its distal offset
@ Ali Hassan . i don't know its appropriate forum to say this but as by chance you are here so i want to tell that your HR department is very pathetic .I dropped my CV for your dept .Initially they asked me to wait than in June they emailed me to reach Cairo on one day notice. Then they said they will take interview on Skype . Nothing ever materialized . One of my 300 page book on selection of orthodontic brackets will be published next month. Hopeful i will share it with so you . So the point is that this approach should be done with professionals.
