My team are now preparing heterocyclic compounds for commercialization and we have a dilemma. What has more synthetic and/or commercial value? Heterocycles that sport ethyl ester groups or methyl ester groups? I sense there is a significant difference between the two types of esters. Does anyone out there have an opinion on this? What would you buy?
It depends on what is your compound going to be used for or what is it useful for. In other words, its profile. You may find in the literature lots of examples of methyl and ethyl esters and these are there not just because they are cheaper or easier to be manufactured. These are on the market because they are the most successful ones for their intended use.
I agree with Teodoro...it depends. Usually methyl esters have a tendency to crystalise better then ethyl, i.e., most of the times an ethyl ester is an oil and the corresponding methyl ester is a solid. This may be an advantage.
Heterocyclic bearing a methyl ester group is more valuable.
