What happens when we heat pure aluminum near its melting point(663oC) in atmosphere(no vacuum or nitrogen)? Does whole of the sample transforms into oxide?
I have come across a paper where aluminum was heat treated near its melting point in open atmosphere and still showed no alumina peaks in xrd.
If you heat treat aluminium below its melting point, it will definitely oxidize in air. Aluminium already oxidizes at room temperature!
Alumina forms as scales on the surface of aluminium which is amorphous. In XRD you can only observe sharp peaks for crystalline materials.
To confirm if your metal is oxidized or not, you do not need to perform XRD. If you just see your aluminium, it will not have metallic luster.
Definitely, all the aluminum in the air should oxidized. The only question is how soon. But if you have the patience, you will get complete oxidation.
To prevent oxidation of the aluminum melt is carried out under a protective layer, for example, sodium chloride.
I also came across that paper. But i guess aluminium should completely turn into oxide unless it is heated under protective atmosphere.
Here i have attached a paper. They have sintered aluminium composites at 5800C and find no traces of alumina in their sample.
