I want to design a fixture. The fixture will have 4 stands (columns). The cross section will be steel pipe or steel bar. The length of the bar will be 150mm. How to calculate the critical load the stands capable of resisting ? Is it possible to use Euler’s formula in this case. what is the criteria to say long or short columns?
There are different methods for design steel columns, depending on the specifications and especially on the loads. You can find what you want be searching in the net.
Why not provide a diagram of the columns as they will be when in service. How are the columns connected? Will there be bracing elements? The load capacity of each column will depend on its steel grade and L/r (length over slenderness ratio). The r value will depend on the cross sectional size of the steel member. The load capacity can obtained from the relevant BS code, namely BS 5950 part 1, 2000 . Practical columns are not designed using Eulers formula.
Dear Amaechi J. Anyaegbunam .The diagram is attached. A sheet metal will be fixed between the upper plate and the lower plate. A tool frogging tool will then deform the sheet according to the tool-path given.
Short and long columns are distinguished using slenderness ratio of each other. Slenderness ratio is the ratio of the effective length of a column to the least radius of gyration of its cross section.
LRFD and ASD methods are proposed for designing the steel members such as steel columns and can be found in valid regulations (e.g. "Specification for structural steel buildings". American Institute of Steel Construction. 2016). Before starting member design, the imposed loads on the members must be determined (this is the most important step).
