Today a teacher can choose from a range of pedagogical tools like case studies, simulation,management games,role plays,action learning etc. If we add technology- enabled tools / approaches, the choice gets enlarged. At the same time,learners in higher education are increasingly becoming more discerning .In this scnario ,how can a teacher select appropriate pedagogical approach/ tool to maximise learning effectiveness ?
I agree with Valter, each student is an individual and learns in a slightly different way. The key is to reach out in a number of different ways so that the students will grasp the concept being taught. Case Studies are great for teaching problem solving techniques. I like to use structured essays as assignments because if forces the student to answer a series of questions within the essay and thus learn the material. I also like to have my graduate students prepare a book review for publication. This teaches them how to critically analyze the work of an author, to write, and to prepare something for publication. I then have them actually submit it to a journal. About half get published. Which is huge for the vitae of a graduate student. But even if they don't get published, they have learned how to do it.
Use of different techniques to be used depend on the subject like computer science, software engineering, system engineering, AI need more use of the technology while some subjects demands less use of the technology like arts subjects where they use some special software like SPSS. The use of technology also depends on the type of research like qualitative or quantitative so to teach in higher education help can be taken from technology as required and necessary.
Im my opinion, this is a problem without a absolute solution because with only two students in a class, probably you should use two different techniques. In other words, seems to me that is impossible to please to greeks and troyans at same time, and maybe only 20% of the students will learn something in high levels.
Still in my opinion, an important factor about the effectiveness of the technics of teaching is the focus of the students to learn.

I agree with all previous replies. I think the answer is given in plenty of books, such as Wagner et al (2005), where 4 parameters are mentioned: input(what is given-used), output (outcome), effectiveness in teaching & cost.

I've found that student interest in course topics is significant in knowing which topics to emphasize and the type of learning activities to design in order to respond to these interests. For example, in my master's in TVET courses, I always get on student interests surveys that students want hands-on experiences that can prepare them for the workplace. As such, my learning activities and assignments are designed to include bringing an industry expert into the classroom (F2F or online) or send students on short visits to industry in completing their assignments. The course feedback is mostly positive with the latter approach.

I think that a teacher's concern and respect for students and their learning can be important. A good teacher who can set high standards for his students via articulating clear goals. Students have to know what they will learn and what they will be expected to do with what they learn.
I understand that the decision is the teacher's, prior knowledge of their students and the curriculum. In that triangle are the answers. Listening to the student, knowing their expectations, their career and professional project can make the best decisions.
It should be considered that the construction of the curriculum is dynamic.
According to my experience, students have different learning styles, that is why one student learns differently from another. However, to waste the teacher in the search of different types of strategies and pedagogical tools, implies a lot of time. The idea is to appropriate effective pedagogical procedures that point to the recognition of learning and so the development of them. Feedback is a powerful pedagogical procedure that identifies and enhances learning in students.
Motivate students by degree scores. Explain all the teaching staff in simple sentences and stepwise, regardless how difficult it is. Proved lots of examples. Be patient with those who do not understand at ones. Quality learning always takes time. Step-by-step explanations is crucial in study process.
