It not too difficult to assume that one of the most important (if not the only one...) factor s the temperature.
Probably the ground temperature has to be over a certain value for a number of days.
It would be of great help is someone can indicate results of the studies involving measurements of temperatures correlated with the timing/start of migration of newts (from temperate regions).
