Please advise. If looking at the relationship between emotional intelligence and resilience in university academics - what would be the best EI theory to use? Considering we have ability model, Trait EI & Mixed model.

Prashanti, this is an interesting question as EI appears to be associated with a number of other aspects and their application and the extent to which it may be considered effective is also dependent on a range of contextual variables. You may find Bar-On and Parker's (2000) work useful. All the best.

The theory of emotional intelligence, according to Daniel Goleman, is best suited to academics. Indeed, according to this author, emotional intelligence is the basis of all other intelligences. For example, it blocks or amplifies our innate mental capacity to think, learn or solve a problem. Goleman is focused on demonstrating that EQ (emotional quotient) predicts success even better than IQ, especially in business and science.

I haven't studied EI per se, but I am studying Psychiatry and in the final phase of becoming a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. I did a quick look up of EI and found it to be rather lacking in the areas it covered. There's a model that Mental Health is using to potentially address ALL children/students, as well as patients of healthcare, initiated here in the United States, over the past 10-15 years. The model is extending into business cultures and system-wide approaches to human interactions. It's called the "trauma-informed" approach.
We don't know who in our paths have been traumatized, in what way, and how long. We also don't know how that is affecting them, and how more trauma is harming them. After all, trauma is cumulative throughout life.
I do recommend that you investigate the "trauma-informed approach" to be applied in academics. I will attach an image from a website in which you can find a bit of an introduction, if you are not familiar with the concepts.
The key would be to empower students, and not bring further harm into their lives. Becoming a "champion" of other human beings, and allow self and others to thrive. Emotional Intelligence, I believe, is designed for the same end, but it doesn't appear to hit the mark like the Trauma-Informed atmosphere of relating interpersonally does. There are entire books, manuals, and lots of research on it.
