What does the 'spatial turn' in social sciences denote?

Space is/has been a buzzword in social sciences for quite some time now. What is the collective output of this turn? Was it a productive turn?

The impact of sociology is very much in any development. It responds positively and I think that the transformation that has occurred can be seen in the developed countries in which the state of transformation can be measured. I hope that my understanding of the question is correct.
