Success is whose who climb till the end . So don't try to converge your research
success . Mathematically success tends to end but not at the end .
Success means many things to me, the most important of which is that I am moving in the right direction and that I may be able to help the human communities, I am a good leader for my students and my research team, and I inspire them and I feel good about myself because success is the goal of everyone in life.

Success: Satisfaction of God, satisfaction of parents about you and satisfaction with yourself ... are the motivation for your success in life at all levels
Your question is basically a complex question as there is no specific definition of success, its a quite relative term. Anyway, success simply indicates the arrival to the pre-decided objectives.That is really an interesting action. But success also suggests achievement of something special as a whole.
Success is relative.
People usually mean by it - "reaching an important milestone", i.e. success is stage- rather than a whole plan- based.
It is also never absolute (meaning a 100%). You can calculate the odds of achieving some percentage of it, but there are too many variables involved, so one needs to adjust his/her expectations as one goes.
Nor is success a matter of justice. It is definitely not in one's favor, if success outcomes (or the lack thereof) are pre-determined and controlled by others, rather than the result of a normal evolution of events.
Finally, success is a question of receiving and giving back (to those who have assisted you on the way).
