What does it mean by the softening of a phonon mode? In the available literature i have interpreted two definitions -

# 1. Softening of a mode means the phonon peak becomes smaller and broader.

# 2. In some literature I have also found that softening means a shift in peak towards lower wave-number.

Please tell which definition is correct or are these connected anyhow?
