Thanks John and Damiano, that's true. It is clear that conservation status is refer to extinction of species in area (in any references). It just pop up in my mind, is it ok if we elaborate the term not just for species (threatened) but for the area where that species live in? I mean if one natural area (A) have 25 species at the red list three top rank, while the other (B) have 1 species at the red list. What does it means? Both of the areas have different conservation status, aren't they? The existence of the threatened species will impact on the area where they live in. The area with the higher number of threatened species will be intensely observed and monitored what and why the population of those species decrease and how to conserve them. If the program success it will lower the conservation status of the area and vice verse.

It is the "non-formal" context I was describing above.

I believe that for the majority of Brazilian researchers "conservation status" means the importance of a taxon or its value. I have worked with brazilian birds assessments and it is always a challenge to change this bias and make them understand that the IUCN status are a way to prioritize taxa with high risk of extinction.

Added to all of above i think it may be describes the extinction rate of any particular ecological system; and the various measures that are taken up to conserve the same.

@Sulistiyowati Hari, Good explanation. Assuming natural habit having 3 red listed species in one circle(A) and another(B) have only one. In circle B, species which red listed let be the keystone species to that area means more or less it mean other species also decreasing in population unknowingly. Circle A , as you said three species are red listed, but it not be keystone species. so both the conversation status be different and considerable.

Not only area which having high threatened Species to be considered and monitor. its needed to be considered the area which having least concern also. all species in this world need to be conserve in some aspects.

@John Adams: from a philosophical/ethical standpoint, it is true that "all species in this world need to be conserved in some aspects"... pragmatically speaking, problem is that this is impossible. Conservation statuses, red-listing, ecological/economical value of species and habitats are all tools to allow conservationists, just like a "triage scale" in hospitals emergency departments.

I agree to you all. However the meaning of "Conservation Status" is depend also on the areas where organisms under this status are living. E.g. in my country (Georgia) conservation status is almost senseless way of plant/animal classification since no any real actions of their conservation is in progress.

That's also true Damiano, but in fact we face many problems not only to anthropogenic driving forces but also natural disaster attribute the loss of species and ecosystems to the accelerating transformation of the Earth. The last is found at our natural resources (even at protected areas) which are decreasing more quickly than we thought. By the way, the conservation statuses reported to IUCN by scientists, NGOs, and Governments are really analyzed based on similar methods?

As Damiano Preatoni pointed out, the conservation status concept can and in fact is now being extended to areas and ecosystems. The IUCN recently published a definition of categories for threatened ecosystems.
