Clearify the transport chain in respect of responsible actors, used transport means, frequented traffic infrastructure and logistic locations. So you get sequences of transport legs (in the same transport mode or intermodal), where you can consider the location points, the detection techniques (like RFID) and the condition to place them there (probably you will need the collaboration of the site ownership or operator). Geostatistical orders can help to find out siginificant location along a transport relation, but approriate measurement points have to be permitted and installed. Maybe our newest conference paper IPIC (here on RG) concerning Air Cargo transport chains can give you some hints in this direction.
