I would like to propose the philosophical question above, which is related to our job as academic advisors.

There are technical and social aspects involved in the education of a new scientist. All over the world, finishing a Ph.D. means getting a license to do science independently and being recognized as a budding academic authority. In developing countries with high rates of illiteracy, it also means giving the person a considerable amount of social power.

In your opinion what skills should a candidate show to honestly earn a Ph.D. title?
