It is very interesting to look at the EO (Entrepreneurial Orientation) construct, that has shed light on how organization pursue entrepreneurial behavior, how it can be learned, fueled, maintained and sustained, and how it affects performances. An insightful perspective can be provided by the Covin and Lumpkin (2011, ETP) and Rauch et al. (2009, ETP)
Organizations are created by entrepreneurial effort and motivation. The high performance is the result of managerial effectiveness and prudent utilization of organizational resources for achieving optimum result. The sustainability is on account of continuous development of all the organizational resources and consequent creation of competitive advantage, resulting in value creation, which is essential for fulfilling the stakeholders' expectations. Therefore for creating and sustaining high performance organization, the entrepreneurial ability, managerial effectiveness and creation of competitive advantage, are essential requirements.
The goal of learning organization is: to create a culture where as a team, employees systematically consume information; share, organize and apply it in ways that improve processes. For instance, learning from mistakes, from customer comments, media sources (ie: competitor price changes) and so forth. On boarding is a good way to initiate this sort of thinking but it must be continually reinforced through on going learning practices, positive reinforcement, recognition, rewards and leadership. These principles can be applied HPO cultures.
Sustainability of high performing organization is based on alignment of mission vision, goals, and values on same direction to satisfy the internal and external stakeholders with quality and excellence. Mission, vision, goals, and values need to be revisited to establish balance between external and internal environment of organization. This balance will create and sustain high performing organization.
I've studied an excellent paper by Huselid (1998) on HPWS (High Performance Work System). I think, it's not bad to read it. It provided a good sense and meaning of HPWS and it's effect on Organizational Performance.
It means working for creating an organization that is able to do good today, and also over a period of time even during adverse circumstances. Such organizations reflect a viable solidity; their performance is not a short-term performance.
HPWS necessitate thoughtful vision, implementable strategy, and high employee engagement
It also means that as an organisation we are willing to face very high attrition and feel proud of our alumni's doing well as Hip'os in and around the society. Even, if we grow exponentially this would become way of life. It also challenges our ability to develop robust organic Organisational process which gets challenge and changed to evolving demands.
