In order to successfully teach young students as future engineers, we should, in my view, recognize as precisely as possible their expectations, their hopes and their level of knowledge about the role of the engineer in society at the start of the learning process.
Dear Jan, I work at R&D Dept. of a Mechanical Engineering enterprise; I have experimented that young future engineers have these expectations:
1. possibility of a good career,
2. a good salary.

You are certainly right: everybody (not only young people) wants to have everything good or even better. But my question is linked directly not with wishing but with thinking. As the academic teacher in the University of technology I want to know what the young candidates think about their future in the role of an engineer? Why they are choosing so difficult way to obtain all the things as mentioned by you?

Thank you for your answer. Of course, they want - in wide understanding - to make a professional career. But what - in your opinion - with an understanding by our students the role of engineer as a creator and willing (intent) to take advantage of this role? Fine art students want to be creators, and engineering people do not? And what about understanding the responsibility for activities in a frames of their future social role?

But do students who start their studies in Engineering understand properly this duty which wait for them in the end of university education? And how we - as their tutors - can prepare them to act according with this rule?

Trying to work on new issue and develop his qualifications continuesly.
The engineer himself can make his profession and profession will not make an engineer. I think if we have both qualification and newest knowledge the engineer will face success in his scientific and work life.

I’m Biomedical Engineer, I studied and living in Mexico, I think the expectations of young people are not realistic, and are very influence by movies, but the reality is very different for each country; in my country, the majority of engineers working in sales, in the best cases are training people or making services. Only few people are designing or making investigation.

You are probably right, but let's have a couple of dream: may be some of young students are not fully materialistic and some of them still believe the mission of engineers as creators of technical means and systems?

Even in those countries where the engineer's incomes doesn't constitute a stimulus to study engineering the young people do it. The main motivation of a youth to study the engineering constitutes the challenge that engineering represents for its lives. They want to be proven themselves in the face of the complexities that represent the engineering careers.
In France I feel like young engineers try to impulse the changes they'd like to see in their ideal future society. As most of this "dreams" are almost impossible in classic companies, lot of them start their own company. Though this is true for biology engineers, like agronomists or food industry engineers, but maybe not for classic engineers (physics, etc...)

i think that the cuban young people have a distorsional decide criterial becaurse you can not find information of all engineers
For sure we have to ask them, but - to me - we have to have also our own point of view, at least for the need of formulating properly question/questions addressed to our students. Am I right?
