The education on climate change is essential and is a step in the right direction to target the youth in our societies. Using comic art as a medium of such an environmental awareness creation and campaign on climate change is one of the powerful means of reaching the innermost self of these young lads. Art appeals to all the senses and speaks to our emotions. The age of humanistic campaign for change especially to halt climate change requires some of these creative approaches. Interestingly, comic art has the characteristics of using entertaining characters to picturesque the need to save the planet through greening activities. The youth are enthused about comical arts and would have a positive impact on them. Gradually, through the comical art, young ones would nurture the ideals of conservation and sustainability as well as the need to live in harmony with nature while engaging in environmentally friendly activities. Our kids need to learn about climate change

The conclusions published by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) this week provide a wake-up call about the importance of teaching kids about sustainability. The IPCC’s dire warnings are based on new evidence just released on the impact of climate change.

The report warns that greenhouse gas levels are at their highest in 800,000 years. It concludes that recent increases are mainly due to the burning of fossil fuels. It recommends ending reliance on fossil fuels and instead fast-tracking development of renewable and alternative forms of energy such as solar and wind power.

Art forms can make special effects on our mind. So the usage of comic art should be effective. That is why comics are already in use for education.

Brain processes images 60,000 times faster than it processes text. So Comics are a stronger learning tool than text books.

I've been using infographics (retroreloader designs) and comic/manga styles to educate young people on a variety of topics especially environmental. They respond very well especially when they can initiate art projects of their own to raise awareness and their own creativity.

There are many points of view to abord this question. First, I think that you are obliged to see if the question is a real question. That implies ALL the theories about climate - even those which consider the climate change a natural changing... see in this sense the astronomical analises: all planets suffer now... in all solar system the temperature increase, and... on Neptune we don't have any influence for the moment. So, in conclusion, we must consider all the theories about climate changing. The 10% of the human influence is enough to take it seriously. 

It would seem to me that the question here is actually a two questions in one. First how is its appropriate to teach a subject like climate change using popular media. Second, is it possible to use the comic art format, normally a fiction form, for factual and documentary work? 

As to the first question, the issue would be how much information can be communicated through this or other forms of popular media. For decades we have used movies and television to communicate, scientific, political and social information. Different media have created different forms form fact based documentaries to fiction films. In this sense, a comic book is just another form of image based media. As Vilem Flusser pointed out when text based information is turned into images (such as comic books, movies or data visualisations) there is a level of transformation/distortion that will occur.   But this is offset by the fact that the information is not comprehensible as pure scientific data ( a very hermetic form of language). So non-specialists need these forms to understand the issues raised.

As to the format of the graphic novel. I think works such as Maus & The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye have shown that serious issues can be investigated through the comics form. As with any use of popular art forms to communicate serious information it most important to not talk down to your audience.
