The importance of social media in higher education cannot be ignored. The current perception is that social media may be employed successfully in student centered learning approach.
Apart from the use of social media for learning and teaching, it is also being used for creating awareness and advertising.

In view of my experience, Face book, whatsapp groups and all other networking sites havre great potential to be used as teaching learning tool and being effectively used in higher education; example, when we were taking our teaching for critical thinking course, our whatsapp group was created by our instructor; group was an effective way of instant communication, in addition with emails. Once, we have to do assignment after selecting research article on critical thinking for critique purpose, but we have to discuss that article with our instructor, prior finalising it for assignment. As, she was busy (course was face to face plus on moodle; blended learning)and had no time to open her email, and she said to us, "whats app the screenshot of abstract, and I will give you the feed back regarding selection of article or not". So, we sent the screen shots of abstracts of our articles, and got feedback instantly, it saved the time and efforts.
Dear Biljana Tosic , I have attached some fine resources about the issue.
Research has indicated that in recent years social media has penetrated almost all types of organizations. Higher education institutions have not been left behind too and have been adopters of this global phenomenon. Social media takes many forms such as social networking sites, blogs, vlogs, instant messaging and virtual communities...
The rapid rise of social media provides numerous possibilities for higher education institutions to adopt it to further their learning and teaching endeavors. The ubiquity and unusually high uptake of social media makes it suitable for administrators, managers, learners and teachers in higher education institutions too.
For learning and teaching, social media is used in a variety of different contexts - language learning, writing development, after-class discussion, synchronous and asynchronous communication, community building and curricular tool. The use of social media in higher education is changing the nature of the relationships of learners and teachers. Social media provides a unique stage for interaction amongst students and teachers and amongst students themselves. Through social media, students find it easy as well as convenient to communicate, access information, and to provide information. Studies have shown that in the recent years academics have been expanding their social media usage to offer after-hours support for students, deliver and host lectures, disseminate information and engage in discussion. The use of social media has also demonstrated increased teacher-student and student-student interaction. With social media, students also become adept at the use of online technologies in learning environments...
Dear Ljubomir Jacić thank you for your comprehensive view of the subject!
I do agree with you when it comes to the fact that social media rapidly change the nature of the student-teacher relationship in higher education settings.
However, not all teachers (perhaps, not all students, too) are always eager to embrace these new technologies when it comes to the academic environment.
What are the negative aspects and why are there negative aspects when it comes to using digital technologies in the digital era?
You are right. I also use WhatsApp group for my course and it is good for information, clarification and feedback. I also use Google classroom and email for assignment, test, and materials sharing
Yes. I also use WhatsApp group for my course and it is good for information, clarification and feedback. I also use Google classroom and email for assignment, test, and materials sharing
Thank you Adesoji Aderibigbe for your contribution to the topic!
... and have you ever used Moodle in the classroom? It can also be beneficial for different assignments, tests, questions and answers, material sharing etc.
I use WhatsApp for teaching organic chemistry. My students send me a picture of a problem; I work it out on paper, take a picture and send it right back. It is neat and solves the problem of having to draw complex structures using software programs.
Social media can make communication between lecturers and students and vice versa easier and less expensive. Group discussion in WhatsApp makes life very easy even during the ungodly time
There is a correlation between social media usage and academic performance of students in universities. Research has proved the heavy presence of social media among students.
– 90% of tertiary school students use social media
– All of them spend an average of 30 minutes/day on social media
These show the level of which students are patronizing these social sites and this may bring along with positive and negative effects on students as far as their academic performance is concerned. The internet is today the most important source of information and the growing dimension of the use of social media by students cannot be underestimated. It is observed that students devote more time and attention to social media than they do for their studies and they cannot pass their examination well if they do not study or learn...
Students academic life has moved to a different dimension since the introduction of social media and several studies have affirmed that social media plays an important role in students in higher education. There are some advantages to the use of social media by students.
Dear Mohammad Mukhit Kazi I am writing an article on a similar topic ... Facebook in Higher Education ... so if you can share link to your research it would be very much appreciated!
Yes, as a faculty member teaching at university and higher education settings, I clearly see the effects of social media on higher education processes. For several years, I have been thinking of Telegram as a social media platform for sharing knowledge between students. I find this media effective.
Yes. As a knowledge hub, YouTube can help students and even instructors, and I believe this media will be effective. And many of the actors of higher education have turned to this medium:

Dear Ghasem Salimi thank you very much for your contribution!
However, do you think that Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram can and should find their rightful place in higher education settings?
Here are some fine resources about Facebook in HE:

I live in Iran and there Facebook, Twitter, here are filter and our students cannot easily use them. Empirical study has not been conducted due to this obstacle in Iran. But I agree with your general view that this Facebook, Twitter affects the participation of students and the sharing of data and information among them.
although no advanced tools can replace the physical presence of teachers & instructors in the classroom, But using social media as Facebook and Twitter or ... seems to fit the needs of the people. it can be very useful to improve the performance of schools and universities.
In a digital world that is full of using computer and mobile devices, it becomes easy to access the information and knowledge seeks by students even if it is not totally virtual learning environment but a blended learning classes. I think we are as college instructors are obliged to insert it in our daily routine to encourage students to it despite the challenges that we may face.
Higher education thrives on a healthy community, and a college’s social media presence is an important extension of that community. Throughout the world, universities and colleges are implementing social media strategies to connect with students, parents, prospects, staff, and even other educational facilities...
Social media often give key words that are useful in the subject of the research and thus shorten the time on the researcher ... This is my own experience in this context.
@liqaa Habeb. A blended learning classes with the use of social media where pictures and videos of Community Resources that could facilitate learning could be shared is inevitable in this technology age.
I define social media as asynchronous platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The active communication and informal sharing of information among strangers.
YouTube discussion forums are a form of social media, but not so much the videos that define the site itself.
I can't speak for hard science disciplines like chemistry, biology and physics. I don't see much value in social media other than teaching those student how to make layman aware of their profession.
Of course, all students should understand the information/data science behind social media in order to increase their digital literacy. It's scary what lengths corporations go to to coerce people out of money. It's the personal information gathered through social media that makes consumers vulnerable. If universities can do anything, it is to teach their students how to be more proactive in protecting their data and actively recognizing vulture eMarketing strategies.
But yeah, students collaborating on sites like Facebook is great.
my answer is Yes, I created a group for my students on Facebook for educational context, I also use Facebook messenger to create special groups for special educational discussions for students that require similar educational attentions
I think social media is bad for students. If I simplify it a lot, then many people no longer know how to multiply 2 * 2, they make a request to Google or to "friends". And they do not always get the right answers. Social networks in particular, and the Internet as a whole, have turned into a garbage dump, where along with verified facts, a lot of fragments of classical texts with numerous errors are entered; unrecognized theories; alternative views, etc. Moreover, the authors of this stream are often not just ignoramuses, "enlightened directly by Nature without sciences", but also explicit madmen, whom noone university would admit in class. Here, it is not always easy for a specialist to figure it out, and even more so for a student.
Umberto Eco wrote about this in a slightly different way (and much talented, of course) in a letter to his grandson (Umberto Eco: "Caro nipote, studia a memoria” L'Espresso - http://espresso.repubblica.it/visioni/2014/01/03/news/umberto- eco-caro-nipote-studia-a-memoria-1.147715). I think the translation can be found ... in the Internet.
Activation for critical thinking of students is a particularly important determinant of effective education. Modern education instruments are important in this matter, thanks to which analytical techniques, brainstorming, debates, discussions, etc. used in the education process of pupils and students are developed. These techniques should also develop creativity, innovation and teamwork. In my opinion, activation of critical thinking of students and pupils, development of discussion skills in debates, development of creativity, innovation and teamwork of pupils and students is perfectly correlated with the development of the concept of modern education 4.0. Currently, in the era of the technological revolution referred to as industry 4.0, new teaching concepts are emerging known as education 4.0.
On the other hand, dynamic development of social media portals on the Internet is currently underway. For young people using smartphones, social media portals are one of the main sources of information. Probably the next stage in the development of social media portals will be the implementation of artificial intelligence into these portals and into search engines, and creating applications such as interactive advisers on individual information websites. Social media portals are at some stages of education, in some education systems they are used to educate students on specific issues and according to the age of the students. But do they really help in the education process or are they just another teaching aid without a significant impact on the learning outcomes? Pupils and students use social media portals to exchange information useful for education. In addition, on Facebook, pupils and students create group profiles where they post joint didactic materials. In addition, they create survey forms for the needs of surveys, the results of which are used for written theses and final essays.
In connection with the above, another key question arises: Should new online media be used in education processes? In my opinion, yes, new online media should be used in education processes. The issue of communication with the use of new online media is very important in the context of an effectively conducted education process. We currently communicate widely through various online media, including email. Some email inboxes that we use have anti-spam restrictions, which makes communication difficult. The development of communication through various internet media, also through social media portals, is an important issue in education. New media should be used effectively in the education process, but their technical specifications are not always fully suitable for the needs of communication development in the context of the implemented education process. However, whenever possible, new online media should be used in education, because young people commonly use them and can be an excellent additional tool in the field of teaching instruments, e.g. for the effective search of necessary, current information.
Yes, it is Information Technologe Age one of it tools are Social Media sites, I consider it a shortcut to Knowledge ( RG, LinkedIn and sometime Facebook ).
Guraya et al suggest that social media’s role in higher education is currently under-utilised and has greater potential in the future. Cheston et al explored the effects of integrating social media tools into medical curricula. Their work found that it not only improved exam scores, but also reflective practice and empathy, both of which are essential skills for doctors. They also noted that these platforms improved learner engagement, feedback and personal development, thus reinforcing the positive effects described in the article by Guraya et al...
