I am rather far from posting any generalized statements (not until any proper, focused research would take place ;) but as for me, Dear Biljana Tosic , I must say that I feel much more 'at home' here, than on academia ('cozy', 'comfortable' - and its not only the case of better general, intuitive layout). Second thing - if not foremost - is the degree of automation of some procedures (which at academia, in some cases dont even exist - much more things have to be done manually, even concerning paid version). Third thing - putting all the scoring, analytics and statistical features only in paid version. is rly a shot in the foot by creators and staff at academia. All of the factors mentioned above - have to be considered as a serious drawback. comparing to RG
Dear Maciej Malara I respect your opinion on generalized statements and I agree with you! I also prefer Research Gate, and I am using it for a few years now.
I have recently opened an account on Academia.edu, but I still have a feeling that all the people are here on Research Gate :)
Hence, this discussion ...
Maybe I could tell you more about it in a couple of months ...
Until then, I will be sharing my scientific research right here :)
Biljana Tosic we all sure be waiting and looking forward to this, that is: following and reading Your valuable scientific achievements along with high quality academic contribution :)
I prefer RG. This because the software is easier to use. Furthermore, the RG score, measuring scientific reputation based on how your works are received by your peers, encourages its use. I think it is a psychological stimulus to use RG to see the score increase.
In connection with the need to establish contacts in the world of science, the need to establish international research teams and conduct research in interdisciplinary and international scope, it is necessary for scientists and researchers to use websites specialized in science issues, also serving as social media portals and also fulfilling the functions of publication indexation databases scientific. Other scientific portals such as Academia.edu and Mendeley also appear in discussions on the Research Gate portal.
In connection with the above, I am asking you the following questions:
- Does any of you have your profiles on all these scientific portals and carried out a comparative analysis? I regularly use the Research Gate portal, because this portal enables establishing contacts with researchers and scientists also operating in other countries.
- Are there any significant differences between the two science portals listed above? Apparently, the functionality of both scientific portals is very similar.
- However, are there any significant differences in the scope of information services offered, searching for publications as well as researchers and scientists operating in specific science disciplines?
- Does any of you have your profiles on all these scientific portals and conducted a comparative analysis to answer the question: what are the key differences between these portals?
- Is it worth having your profiles on all these science portals or is it enough to use the Research Gate portal? In addition, do the research portals ResearchGate, Academia.edu and Mendeley have some important functions that appear in the standard offer of information services of popular social media portals such as Facebook, Tweeter, LinkedIn, Google+ etc.?
RG is in league far and far higher than Academia.edu. RG is free and zero cost but the one is costly anf most probably dead. RG is people oriented and truly enjoable
The discussion may have a bias. People using RG are likely those who prefer RG compared to Academia. if this discussion was to start at Academia edu most replying would likely like Academia. I also prefer RG .....
RG has been the better choice in my opinion. It’s a free tool after all. The paid version of academia, however, offer more resources than RG. But again, free of charge is better, especially for those who come from low income countries.
