In the field of psychotherapy there is a strong tradition of following major approaches. Therapists are often convinced of special approaches like behavior therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, psychoanalysis, depth-oriented psychotherapy, humanistic therapy, hypnotherapy, systemic therapy, etc. But as we know, there are a lot more.
In some countries these approaches/categories are even institutionalized.
On the other hand, there are some critical empirical results that indicate that the influence of an approach on efficacy or effectiveness is rather small (e.g. Wampold).
Some researchers, therapists, and theoreticians tried to integrate some of these approaches, but also got into problems like incommensurability, eclecticism etc.
Do you think these approaches/categories are useful? Do you think integration is possible? Are there new promising approaches of psychotherapy integration? What, in your opinion, is the current state of psychotherapy integration?
