Hi everyone. I'm actually doing a study on the teaching of sociolinguistic competence. I'd like to know what you think of research on the area of sociolinguistic competence. I noticed that more people focus specifically on speech acts. I understand that speech acts also falls under pragmatic competence. I have an opinion that maybe people prefer to do studies on speech acts (and not other aspects of sociolinguistic competence) because they are more easily measurable and observable. What do you think?

Since sociolinguistics has to do with society ( sociology)on the one hand and language ( linguistics) on the other, you can hardly think of sociolinguistic competence as autonomous. Having said that, let me add that Speech Acts Theory, which originated from research in the philosophy of language, is very interdisciplinary as well, therefore, it has a far wider territory than pragmatics. If you intend to use it as a theoretical framework to research sociolinguistic competence, go ahead and give it a shot. Best wishes
Hi Mariia Boiko . I have in-process or in development (sorry, english isn't my native language) doctoral thesis about the impact of memes on the lexicon of my students and from what I achived in this point of my research is that you can see and witness a natural process of evolution of words and lexical loans based on "symbolic realism" the study participants are immersed.
As grammer teacher and I'm loving my research because is also giving me hints to make investigation action (hope are the right words).

As far as I understand your question, there is a thin line between sociolinguistic competence and pragmatic competence. Rest, I agree with Jinan F.B Al-Hajaj that we can hardly think of sociolinguistic competence as an autonomous.
