we (Arc-Team) get good results with Augmented Reality exhibits (for indoor and outdoor). Here (http://arc-team-open-research.blogspot.it/2012/01/some-funny-experiments-for-archeos.html) and here (http://arc-team-open-research.blogspot.it/2013/02/it-is-carnival.html) some of the first experiment we did . We used many of these applications for this exhibition (http://arc-team-open-research.blogspot.it/2015/02/the-facce-exhibition-is-inaugurated-in.html). Here you can see the first idea of the exhibition (http://arc-team-open-research.blogspot.it/2014/03/facce-i-molti-volti-della-storia-umana.html). We also used digital holograms, you can see an example at the end of this presentation (arc-team-open-research.blogspot.it/2014/02/digital-archaeology-at-lund-university.html), more ore less the last slide. Another good topic are 3D reconstruction and especially 4D visualization, like this one (http://arc-team-open-research.blogspot.it/2013/12/caldonazzo-castle-from-ruins-to.html). Currently we are working very much also with 3D printing, open source electronic devices and conductive paint. I hope it is useful.

Hi Tetiana, is institutions has their own way to archive their institutional memories. It is important to have a platform of archiving and the way of access or retrieve them once its needed. below link is how world bank do it.

Hi Tetiana,

I try first to identify the narrative or story you would like to tell locally at the display/cultural material level and at the global institutional level first.  Storyboard out what your visitors would engage with the narrative (passive or interactive) determine how they are to move from "discovery to discovery" in the narrative(s) you have created for them and then if the interaction element is mixed (Internet-of-things, visual, audio, tactile, smell) and determine the right delivery system for each experience.  Remember you don't have to use all 3D or touch screen if you don't want or can't afford it as it's all about the narrative.

Once you have storyboarded or mapped out the experience, then the technology part begins to play an important role, but only in service of the information you are trying to convey. I suggest reading Tim Ingold's "Walking the Plank".  It's an exercise I use with my design interaction students and the basic premise is "how does one saw a piece of wood"? Really it should be simple, but when designing the process, there is a written, visual and audio story that leads the participant in a process of discovery towards completing a task.

Personally I think they are a total waste of time and resources. Museums should educate, not be entertainment centers.
