Energy saving is very important and desirable to minimize environmental impact and climate change. To save energy, Mother Nature always uses the spherical or cylindrical shape since the sphere with the same surface contains a greater volume than all the other geometric solids.
Scarcity will lead to man's realization that we need to save. Ultimately the environment will be the final frontier to impose a need for scarcity despite innovations to look for alternatives.

Walk more, eat less meat, turn off lights when not in use, bring your own bag to market, make fewer babies, use less water, ride the bus, buy used goods when possible, VOTE! Whatever are the things to do, we have to pass them to our children through teaching, it must be part of our life style.
In general, we should group more instead of splitting, separating, isolating, that became the trend of the modern world. This means to travel by public transport, more people sharing the same office, the same room or house (not just like our grandparents who lived 10 crowded in the same house, neither 1 person in a villa or palace as today); care to unplug computers, TVs when not in use; try to re-use everything possible (shopping bags, tools, fabrics, threads, etc.); recycle as much as possible; buy bulk food rather than overpacked food. Also, better control of our own will/determination to reduce the harmful habit of renewing everything as fashion changes (gadgets, clothing, cars, etc.).

Simple lifestyle can save energy. We should control over-consumption of natural resources. Increase of population will also be a problem. Use of (IT) information and communication technology instead of travelling and gathering will also save energy. There are many thins to do. What is lacking is the awareness & interest.
A very good question which is simple but conflicting in answer. Human greed for marvelous life can't allow it to live a simple life. Human is creating vast disorder within the nature. In reward, human civilization will face great risks of it existence. Environmental degradation and biodiversity loss will pose great imbalance which is also in not favor to humanity.
Use of plastic is more dangerous than using underground bio-fuels. Almost all items are being wrapped in plastics in countries like India where often alternatives are easily available.
Will the nature allow such cancerous growth of artificial materials where there is no ethics behind to make use of it.
My answer deviates somewhat from the proper answer, however unplanned use of technology is disastrous. Scientists and politicians along with common people should take it seriously.

We have used far too much energy that pollutes, so we need to live simpler lives with little travel and more work from home. If you haven't scraped plans to spend more energy. it is time now to reconsider and think of nature first.
