I am researching about psychological carrying capacity within the scope of sustainable tourism. I researched UNTWO's criteria but I do not find. If you have knowledge about this, I would be glad if you can help.
Hello, in Wildlife Tourism (Tourism and Hospitality Management Series) 1st Edition by Myra Shackley (1996) there is carrying capacity formula used after Boullon (1985) [ Boullón, R.C. 1985. Planificación del Espacio Turístico. Ed. Trillas, México, DF.]. Some practical applications have tried to incorporate that in certain standards (e.g. Standards for Outdoor Recreational Areas, https://www.planning.org/pas/reports/report194.htm). That probably my two cents to contribute to your research. I'm in the progress with publication about carrying capacity of Baltic Sea beaches in Latvia right know. Form where you refer to the definition of "psychological carrying capacity"? Would be interesting to include more references from this aspect either.
Hello Andris Klepers thank you for answering my research question. When I examined the studies on psychological carrying capacity, I came across two different research methods.
Of them;
1. Questionnaire for tourists whether they are satisfied with the population in the destination.
2. Comparing the physical characteristics of the destination with the number of tourists.
The Boullón you mentioned, R.C. Since I could not access resources such as 1985. and Myra Shackley (1996), I could not review it for now. However, the main issue I want to reach is whether there is a standard set by global tourism organizations in this regard. Are there any sources you encounter in this regard?
Hi, tourists’ perceptions | carrying capacity are investigated widely. E.g. in this recent article, hope you have access: Management priorities and carrying capacity at a high-use beach from tourists’ perspectives: A way towards sustainable beach tourism. By Chung-Ling Chen & Ning Teng. (2006). There are similar reseraches about perception and carrying capacity. But there will not be one standart allways. Minimal borders could be defined, but that's not about optimal feelings - comfort instead of acceptance.
