Academics in many countries concentarte mainly on teaching. Some academics are involved in research while some are in administrative works. How these academics could be motivated to do research?
There are many ways that academics can be motivated to research by implementing policies such as:
(a) that promotion of academics within the university (from one level to the next) should be based on research output (publications, grants received, number of research students supervised);
(b) that allocation of resources within university faculties/departments be based on research productivity of each faculty staff members/departments;
(c) that potential research contribution by staff members of each faculty/department would be taken into account in considering overall productivity assessment of the faculties/departments (e.g. staff number increase or decrease may be linked).
However to motivate the academics to do research there is a need to promote the research culture within the university (via conducting series of workshops on writing of research papers, preparation of an external grant application, about research methodology). In addition, the university may like to introduce faculty seeding grant/ university grant scheme to novice (new) researchers who have difficulty in obtaining external funds because they do not have track record of publication or have not reached a level to compete for external research funds etc. Furthermore, there may be a need to arrange a monthly lunchtime research sessions, a faculty research day, and provision for scholarships to staff who will undertake further research studies or present research papers in national and international conferences.
