Hi I am experiencing manganese dissolution (soluble Mn2+) in drinking water distribution system (PVC) after switching from ozone to O3+UV AOP process for pesticide removal from ground water. Don’t have almost no data now, but just wondering what could be the cause? After AOP there’s no GAC so the AOC/BDOC is obviously increased. There is also increased chlorine consumption so residuals were lower from begining and than dosing point of chlorine was moved downstream to reach higher conncentration. It could be change in current biofilm and estabilishing new equilibrium. Not expecting change in chemical corrosion potential of water. Any ideas or similar experiences?

Interesting question! I assume that your UV AOP process involves H2O2, which is cleaved into OH radicals by UV-C radiation. The involvement of H2O2 could cause the formation of Mn2+, since Mn4+ comprising deposits, e.g. hollandite or cryptomelane, could impose the following reaction:
H2O2 + MnO2 → MnO + O2 + H2O while MnO is soluble in water.
Additionally, this reaction might be accelerated by the application of UV radiation due to the decomposition of organic layers on top of the Mn-mineral particles.

Thank you for your answers guys. Thomas, the dissolution of manganese occurs in distribution system, not in the treatment plant. So your equation would suggest that H2O2 is leaving the plant and exist long enough to reach more distant parts of the system with 2 and more days retention time.

Indeed the lifetime of H2O2 is quite limited to cause the effect remote of the location of treatment .

Excess manganese causes electrolyte imbalance / disturbance. Will have serious impact on renal and cardiovascular system.
