What came up was the question of why Horowitz & Hill, authors of the famed book “The Art of Electronics” used the word “Art” in the title. Why “Art?” We finally agreed that, indeed, electronics is an art form. Hard to learn, best picked up through trial and error (textbook circuits being notoriously difficult to get to work). Then comes constant practice and hopefully mastery. However much I don’t want to say it, it’s not for everyone. Then today there’s computer programming, which is becoming an inseparable part of electronics. That too is just as challenging for the majority of students. As one who teaches electronics at several university levels I appreciate your question. It is hard to teach these subjects to students who have no real connection with it outside the classroom.
