Road traffic accident (RTA) is one of the most common causes of preventable deaths. In 2018 more than 1.51 lakh deaths from RTA were registered only in India. There were 1.35 million deaths from RTA globally in 2016. Could you imagine, what a huge number of deaths have been taking place worldwide each year due to RTA? The world should think of the measures to prevent these unusual deaths. What do you think about the issue which causes more death in a year than that of COVID-19?
Dear Olivier Serrat thanks for your excellent contribution. You have mentioned that inadequate enforcement of traffic laws is one of the causes of RTA, I think it is the major cause especially in most of the 3rd world countries.
The causes of road traffic injuries are speeding; driving under the influence of alcohol and other psychoactive substances; nonuse of motorcycle helmets, seat-belts, and child restraints; distracted driving; inadequate enforcement of traffic laws; unsafe road infrastructure; unsafe vehicles; and inadequate post-crash care. What can be done to address the cause of road traffic injuries will depend, case by case, on the factors at play and what conditions them but a holistic, safe system approach is needless to say preferable, where possible.
"Self Discipline" is the only the mantra to prevent road accident.It is a cumulate effort of everyone in the road and govt has to play a pivotal role in implementing and managing road safety rule in more strict way.

The drivers should adhere to the rules and road signs at all times and be patient with one another. Time management is also crucial when you are a driver, i.e. to be on time can save many lives.

To prevent deaths from RTA, people should learn to use alternative means of communication for businesses and other things outside their present location. For example, people should instead send mails, emails, sms etc instead of travelling. People should also embrace online commerce instead of actually travelling to the market, instead, the goods should travel.
Essential travels should be done via alternative means (rail, air etc) as long as the logistics(finance and availability) can be met.
Government on its part especially on Africa should consider good road management practices. Reconstruction activities should be done when there are less traffic volume e.g in the midnight's.
Government should also begin to implement ambulatory services and functional emergency services that can be scrambled in minimal time.
Also, governments should eliminate bureaucratic behaviors as seen in many countries in management of victims of accidents (other forms inclusive). For instance, blood transmission services should be available with less bureaucratic issues.
On the part of the citizens, responsibility should be preached. The need for careful driving should be preached and there should be capacity building amidst career drivers. People should take care of their vehicles. Use prescribed tyres, always replace worn brakes etc.
Finally, there should be fines and even mild imprisonment for road traffic defaulters such that people are wary of irresponsible acts on the roads.

RTA prevention is a multifactorial issue:
- Primary prevention: removal of circumstances causing injury - eg, traffic speed reduction, vehicle fitness, road condition, driver training, license control, pedestrian rules, alcohol consumption, smart traffic management system, etc.
- Secondary prevention: reduces the severity of injury should an accident occur - eg, seatbelts, fitting stair gates, child safety car seats, bicycle helmets, smoke alarms, etc.
- Tertiary prevention: optimal treatment and rehabilitation following injuries - eg, effective first aid, appropriate hospital care, etc.

It's a burning issue, to resolve this crisis, government authority's positive willingness as well as public's self consciousness is very important. Enforce restrict governmental traffic road measures ( like speed limits; special signed ways to pedestrian; posted traffic signs .... etc) to prevent death from road traffic accidents
In Russia, according to statistics for March 2020.
The main violations of the requirements of the Road Traffic Regulations that led to an accident are (fatal accident):
- inconsistency of speed with specific conditions (64 accidents or 25.4%),
- violation of the sequence of travel (56 accidents or 22.3%),
- violation of the rules of passage of pedestrian crossings (46 accidents or 18.3%),
- violation of the rules of overtaking or entering the oncoming lane (20 accidents or 8%).

Traffic rules and regulations should be made compulsory in school education
Keep at least one hand on the steering wheel. Reduce in-car distractions such as changing radio stations or CDs, cell phones, eating or momentarily taking a hand off the wheel. A gust of wind, pothole or a blown tire could send the vehicle into another lane and cause a serious accident. Watch for kids.

Self Discipline" is the best way to prevent road accident.
In spite of stringent penal provisions, road accidents are there often due to negligence on the part of some non-serious drivers. It is very difficult to change a person by way of heavy fines and penalties. In order to save precious lives, more effective security features(e.g. Airbags) must be included in vehicles.
