Yusuf I suppose degrees should constitute part of the entire jigsaw to the overall development of the human being. Therefore, in as much as universities, colleges and higher education institutions design and deliver courses for graduates, the economic, political and socio-cultural institutions and contexts within which the graduates will be contributing to should also play some role in enhancing not only the number of graduates that HE institutions produce every year but also the quality of the graduates and the opportunities for them to contribute their very best. As I see it, a good university degree is the one that is got without the interference of any system of "inbreeding", or, in other words, the one that is got by hard work, talent, patience, and perseverance. To be taken seriously, such a degree should be only attributed to those who defend their dissertation before a candid and qualified jury. A university degree via Internet is more a fraud than a true university degree.

A good university degree should be one that is competitive with global equivalents irrespective of the university or country in which the university is located. This is the rationale behind the insistence on minimum standards in vogue in developing countries.

A good university degree comprise of various features. Some of them are:

1. The quality of education and evaluation being ensured by an independent body

2. The faculties are considered the heart and brain by the university administration and are continuously consulted for enhancing the quality of education

3. No place of dirty politics or nepotism

4. Healthy relationship between and among faculties, students, staffs and administration

5. Effective and timely feedback system

6. Enabling environment to grow and develop

7. True value of developing research culture

The validity of a university degree is determined above all by the opinion of the stakeholders. Each of the employers and users, including the private sector and public and governmental scientific institutions, can show the total value of a university degree by validating these degrees for various applications.

Preparedness, capability, confidence and resolution are all the signs and measures of what constitutes a good university degree. Not the level earnt or the transferable value of what that means to some employers, which came about purely because of the strength of those values and standards you have gained, certainly not by good luck or fortune. So go out and be yourself, not just your qualification; Because that is what separates you from all the rest of the herd with an equivalent university degree and it`s what people will judge you upon. As you establish yourself in the job and many jobs to come in your career journey when they are reviewing your annual capability and achievements for the possibility of status advancement for responsibilities and salary increase.

C: If you pass your college days with a very good cooperative relationship with others, you enjoy it. You learn to live in harmony.

QE: What you learn as you complete the degree: does that help you live a quality life or you simply gather theoretical knowledge? If degree helps you live, that is quality education.

LV: Which aspect of your life is supported by your degree? Have you learnt ethics? Have you learnt to be independent? Have you learnt the ways of living? etc.

The success of graduates of "low standard" universities in graduate studies at "high standard" universities is largely due not to "low standard" universities, but to the abilities, motivation, and work of these graduates. The quality of the university degree seems to play a minor role here.

You are absolutely correct in your observation Sergey. But levelling the blame on the students "low standard" for what constitutes a bad university degree is not necessarily constructive when employers are seeking an employee with excellent abilities, capabilities and the proven experience to hit the ground running with successful performance in an excellent opportunity for them to advance their career at the highest of levels. Because an employer should not blame the applicants low standard of performance, but place the blame with the teachers who allowed that low standard of performance in their student become that students reality.

I agree, Stuart: "low standard" university graduates are the fault of the universities: either they recruited weak students, or they were poorly taught. This is why employers tend to hire graduates from "high standard" universities. Although there are very talented graduates from "low standard" universities.

I cannot help but observe that personality of the teacher shines through every time when that teacher has a particular learning methodology of infusing their students with memories, knowledge and the confidence of still being able and capable of producing their very best performance on their very worst of days. My memories, my knowledge and my confidence were definitely improved by a very charismatic, expertly knowledgeable and yet able to convince a copy typist about the importance, proof and yet fundamental simplicity in the truth of everyday reality of entropy and thermodynamics of a lecturer named Professor Wilshere from Warwick & Swansea Universities of material technology. He would purposely invite all of his lecturing students out on a pub crawl to get us so tanked up we could hardly stand up (he certainly knew how to drink alcohol); and then incredulously and to everyone`s astonishment and bewilderment he whipped out from his briefcase past examination paper`s for the last 5 years to give all of us in turn a mock, oral examination of the knowledge needed and tested to get a good credit mark. Everyone of us in his year group got a credit or distinction. He had many, many contacts and liaisons with research and development teams from almost every company and organisation in advanced engineering across the U.K. where each and everyone of us got either a permanent junior or renewable contract position at interview. Why ? Because they knew Professor Wilshere, and knew his teaching methods created the type of inquiring yet disciplined and ordered employee they wanted.

Wonderful. In good universities, the concentration of such or just good professors is much higher. Such professors are appreciated there, so they tend to go there - from bad universities.

A good university degree is the one in which field you are really interested in.
