If we excite an atom, it de-excites to a lower energy state almost instantaneously(?). Firstly, why does it 'need' to de-excite? Secondly, what makes it de-excite?

Suppose I do the experiment in vacuum with a single atom. Would it still de-excite? Lastly is there a rigorous theory which explains this, or it just like conservation of energy which cannot be proved and always holds true?
